Fort Yates was created in 1875 to replace Fort Rice. The fort sat directly on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. Fort Yates took over the responsibilities of Fort Abraham Lincoln in 1889. In 1903 Fort Yates was abandoned as a military establishment, with duties shifting to Fort Lincoln. Civilian settlement continued at this site.
