Relation [Is Part Of] North Dakota eighth grade curriculum Biography/History Originally known as New Fort Berthold, the name was changed to Fort Stevenson the same year as its completion, 1867. The military turned the fort over to the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in 1883. The civilian post office closed in 1894. The site now rests under Lake Sakakawea.
