Bertine Sem registered a Homestead claim in 1902. These were the papers she had to fill out in order to make her claim and prove that she had met all the requirements of the law. Once the final document, written on December 22, 1904, reached the land office in the Department of the Interior in Washington, D.C., clerks prepared the "patent" giving Bertine ownership of her land.
