| Transcription | "Icelandic-American family that has contributed six members to Uncle Sam's two 20th century wars. Edward Burnhoft and his wife Soffia Brynjolfson Bernhoft and their fifteen children, residing in Cavalier, North Dakota. The following are the boys who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States: Top row left to right second Alfred, Pvt., Vet. World War II. fourth William, Pfc. Vet. World War I. seventh Otto, Tec, 4, Vet. World War II. Center Row left to right first Orville, S-Sgt. Vet. World War II. Fourth Olafur Pvt. Vet. World War I. seventh Leonard, Pvt. , killed on Leyte, Feb. 28, 1945. Prior to his death Leonard had received the following awards: Bombat Infantry Badge, the Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, the Presidential Unit Citation, Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with three Campaign Stars, Pre-Pearl Harbor Ribbon and the Philippine Liberation Ribbons. At the time of his death, he had been thirty-six months overseas. Orville assembled the following decorations in the fourteen months of his service in the European Theater: Expert and Combat Infantry Badge, The Good Conduct Medal, The European Theatre Ribbon with three campaign stars, the American Theater Ribbon, and the Victory Ribbon." – typed on label affixed to back of photograph. |
