Biography/HistoryRev. Gustav Marcelius Oftedal was born in Stavanger, Norway on Feb. 22, 1846. He attended the Stavanger Latin School and Christiania University, before coming to the United States in 1877 with his wife Octavia and children Hans and Gunhild. He attended Augsburg Seminary, and was a pastor in Minneapolis, Minn. from 1877-1881; Alexandria, Minn. from 1881-1884; Christine, N.D. from 1884-1889; Buxton, N.D. from 1889-1902; and Minneapolis, Minn. from 1902-1914. He died in Minneapolis on Dec. 5, 1918. Besides the two children born in Norway, he and Octavia had the following children born in the United States; Arne, Gustav, Sverre, Axel, Trygve, Laura and Olga.
