| Transcription | "Red Clover Seed, Joe R. Askew 1893, on top of load."- Written note accompanying photograph. "Wagon Load of Red Clover Seed Marketed in Fargo Brings the World's Record Price. A check for $3, 247.17, probably the largest sum ever paid in the world for a single load of clover seed, was paid by Magill & Co., of Fargo, to W.H. Askew, a farmer residing near Casselton. Mr. Askew marketed the load of clover shown in the accompanying picture, and received the check facsimile of which is also presented here. The Casselton man planted 65 acres to medium red clover last spring, and it yielded three and one-half bushels of bright, choice seed an acre. On the basis of gross income, the clover seed crop was worth $50 an acre to Mr. Askew, in addition to the value of the crop for feeding purposes." - Fargo Forum, Dec. 1, 1917, p. 2. |
