| Biography/History | Col. R. H. Hankinson was a Civil War veteran who became involved in the telegraph and telephone industry, prior to his arrival in Dakota Territory in 1881. He settled on his homestead claim on Lake Elsie in Richland County. Here he operated Brightwood Stock Farm where he raised Black Angus cattle. He had hoped to start a city on Lake Elsie named Kelly, however this ended when the Soo Line Railroad built their line two miles north of the lake. Hankinson moved his store to the site and the town of Hankinson, N.D. was founded. R. M. Hankinson was active in politics serving in the North Dakota Legislature. He died in 1911. |
