| Biography/History | The three story building at 109 8th Street N. (formerly 9th Street N.) belonged to a complex of boarding houses belonging to Sara Swart, wife of Charles Nears Swart. The Swart's moved to Fargo in 1879, and bought property on the western edge of town. Because Mr. Swart was an engineer with Northern Pacific Railway, he was away from home most of the time, and Mrs. Swart was very lonely, so she began to take in lodgers at her home at 110 7th Street (formerly 8th Street). The Swart House became a popular hostelry, and soon the complex boasted of three buildings and a barn. The largest, a 28 room building called "The Big House" was located at 109 8th Street. The lodging house was a popular with divorce seekers during the years when divorce laws required only a 90 day residency period. |
