| Biography/History | On August 17, 1946, Elroy Hazeman hired Walter Anderson, a taxi driver with City Cab Co., to drive him from Little Falls to the farm of his parents in Pierz, Minnesota. When they arrived at Pierz, Hazeman pulled out a gun and proceeded to rob and kill Anderson, shooting in the back of the head. After hiding the body in some brush, on his family farm, he drove the taxi to near Margie, Minnesota where he abandoned it. He hitchhiked to Bemidji, and then took a bus back to his job with Norling Silo Co. in Svea, Minn. On August 22nd, Hazeman quit his job, and wandered around the region. Meanwhile the deserted the cab was fond August 20th, and Anderson was determined to be missing. On September 3rd, Anderson's body was found by Elroy Hazeman's younger brother and sister. On October 24th, Hazeman boarded a Greyhound bus in Minneapolis, driven by Lloyd Mertz. Mr. Mertz recognized the passenger as that of the wanted Elroy Hazeman and radioed ahead to Fargo police. Police in Fargo, took Hazeman into custody at the Union Bus Depot with no resistance. On December 3, 1946, a Morrison County grand jury, indicted Elroy Hazeman on first-degree murder. He was found insane and possessing homicidal tendencies, and was committed to the St. Peter State Hospital on December 5th. |
