| Transcription | "Left Alma Anderson, Right Josephine Uleberg Anderson" - Handwritten on slide. "This is my aunt Alma Anderson's claim shack. It was one room. A curtain closed off 1/2 of it to serve as a bedroom at night. The fold-up bed can be seen covered with a cotton ticking cover on the left of the photo. A clothes closet (a luxury) with a curtain drape was directly behind my mother (holding me.) She cooked on a kerosene stove. Her refrigerator was the water well. She put milk & cream & butter in a tin pail, lowered the pail into the well & secured the rope to a board on top of the well. She taught a country school a few months (they didn't have a long term) while proving up her land. She had attended the Normal School at Mayville, N.D. (so had my father & he was also a teacher for 3 years at Oakes, N.D." - niece Avis Busse's note in Lindgren papers (Mss292.1.4). "Interior of Alma (left) Anderson's shack.
