Transcription"A deposed $250, 000 monarch of the rails - the workmen are using acetelyene torches to cut it up so it can be removed - and consigned to the scrap heap. The immense steel frame of the Empire Builder locomotive was cracked in three places and the giant machine utterly wrecked for any futher use. The fireman died in his cab - the engineer was seriously hurt." - Caption with same photograph published in Fargo Forum & Daily Republican, Feb. 1, 1932, p. 1.

Biography/HistoryRailway collision took place at 5:54 p.m. on Jan. 30, 1932, two and a half miles north of Wahpeton at the junction of the Milwaukee Road and Great Northern Railroad lines. A Great Northern train plowed into a Milwaukee Road train killing three railroad workers, Gerald O. Ostrander, Albert M. Tipping and Timothy O'Connor.
