DescriptionInterview conducted by Allen Spiker is almost entirely in German, begnning with biographical and historical information regarding the family, both in Russia and coming to America and North Dakota. There are a number of stories told by Mr. Streifel including about school, drinking 'homebrew', wedding and a girl taking off with lover. For approximately minutes 19 to 46 Streifel pronounces words and phrases in German as requested by Spiker, followed by additional German stories and singing. Later into the tape can be heard ocassionally the voices of several other unidentified people.

Biography/HistoryRochus Streifel was born August 28, 1899 in Pierce County, N.D., son of Thomas and Genevieve (Heisler) Streifel. He married Elizabeth Wolf in 1921 at Selz, N.D. She was born in 1903 in Pierce County. After farming there until 1936 they moved to a farm at Esmond, N.D. In 1951 when they moved into town they operated a grocery store until 1963. They raised eight children. Rochus died in 1983 and Elizabeth in 2001.
