| Biography/History | Joseph Paxman, born April 1, 1851, came to Hamilton from Ontario about 1880. (Mrs. Paxman stayed in Manitoba the first winter with relatives.) He purchased rights to the "tree claim" quarter from the previous one to file on it. His daughter, Alice Paxman Page, and his son, George, helped plant the 6,000 or more trees in this grove. Nearly all of the trees grew. A few years later he purchased the home quarter. …In the early 1900's, when George finished school, Joseph purchased the general store in Hamilton. They kept a good stock of general merchandise but in 1918 the store and adjoining newspaper building burned down. Within a couple of years, George erected a large new store building and was in business in that location for over 60 years. … Joseph Paxman died Oct. 3, 1931, at the Drayton Hospital. George Paxman died June 7, 1950, in the Grafton Hospital. … Mrs. George Paxman, Isabelle, was born in a log house near Guelph, Ontario, Canada. She taught primary grades in Hamilton from 1904-1907 and worked in the family store for over 50 years. |
