| Biography/History | "Bruce Baseball Team: back row l. to r.: Louis McFadden, Joseph McFadden, unknown, Buff McFadden, William McConnell. Center row: center - Erwin McFadden, others unknown." "Bruce community is located about eight miles south and west of Neche. Its history began … when Mr. Robert McConnell of Allenford, Bruce County, Ontario, came to Dakota Territory in 1878. In 1879, Mr. McConnell built the first home between Pembina and the Tongue River on his homestead. In 1880, Mr. McConnell met his wife and six children 0 Margaret (Renwick), Minnie (Schluchter), Agnes (Baker), Alex, William and Albert in St. Vincent with his team of oxen." "Mr. and Mrs. David McFadden and family came from Bruce County, Ontario in 1880 and filed on a homestead in the Bruce community southwest of Neche. The members of their family were: Louis, Wilbert, Melville, Joseph, Lawrence, Lavern, Irwin, Lloyd, Edna (Dingle), Laura (Hanson), and Elizabeth. … The Bruce Post Office was at one time located on the David McFadden homestead." "Joseph James McFadden was born in Bruce County, Ont. On July 22, 1876, the son of David and Elizabeth (Briggs) McFadden. He married Nellie V. Hinds on January 18, 1903 in Carmen, Manitoba. … They farmed southwest of Neche until his death Feb. 8, 1938." "Eva Hughes and William McConnell were married August 9, 1899 and lived on the farm his father, Robert McConnell, homesteaded. … William died in 1961."
