| Biography/History | The tintype was developed by Hamilton L. Smith of Kenyon College, Ohio, and patented by him in 1856. Tintypes are direct positive images and were on thin sheet iron that had been lacquered black or brown. Tintypes became very popular in the United States, were less expensive, and were frequently mailed. |
