| Biography/History | Charles Retzlaff was born in Leonard, N.D. on October 28, 1904 and grew up on a nearby farm. In 1931 Retzlaff, the Dakota Dynamiter, began boxing professionally. He began in small bouts in Fargo and Grand Forks, but quickly rose through the ranks to the national circuit as a heavyweight. He moved to Duluth as his career progressed. His crowning moment was on January 17, 1936 in Chicago when he had a title fight with Joe Louis. Retzlaff was knocked out in one minute and twenty-five seconds in the first round, effectively ending his career, and in 1937 he returned to farming in Leonard, N.D. with his wife Ella Retzlaff. |
