| Biography/History | "Taken May 31, 1926. Seated Mr. and Mrs. Otten, Civil War Veteran, standing l. to r. Frank O;Leary and Charles Gynn, Veterans of World War I." "John A. Otten was born at Marietta, Ohio, April 17, 1844. When 17 years of age, he enlisted in the Union Army and took active part in 46 battles but was never severely wounded. He was with Sherman on his famous march from 'Atlanta to the sea.' He was discharged July 8, 1865, at Louisville, Ky. … In 1866, he and two friends came to the Dakota Territory and in May, 1869, he was stationed at Smuggler's Point (just north of Neche) as Collector of Customs. He was our first Postmaster at Smuggler's Point in 1873 and was one of our first county commissioners and Justice of the Peace. … He was married to Minnie Schultze, April 16, 1872, at St. Paul, and moved here in 1875. To them were born six children: Hattie, Edward, Henry, John G., Ben, and Annie. … Mr. Otten died February 21, 1934." |
