| Biography/History | Albert Francis Appleton was born March 1850 in Ripon, Yorkshire, in England. Naturalization records show that he has his first papers on May 16, 1879 in Pembina, N.D. In the 1885 Dakota Territory Census A.F. Appleton is listed as being a farmer from England, in Pembina at the age of 35 years old. Charles Augustus Appleton was born on May 6, 1880 in Dakota Territory. He married Margaret E. and died in 1968 in Washington state. Charles and his brother John Francis Appleton, born in Canada in 1876, both had WWI draft registration cards from 1917-1918 in Seattle, #3, Washington. Frederick Albert Appleton was born on April 2, 1878 in Ontario Canada, he later married Adelina. Frederick's WWI Civilian Draft Registration was in Seattle #7, Washington.
Albert Francis Appleton, born January 14, 1850, at Bishop Monkton, near Ripon, West Riding, Yorkshire, England was brought to Canada by his parents in 1851, and he lived in Ontario, eventually marring Martha Tay. In 1879 he and his family (three children), together with his nephew, Joseph Fay, James Corbin and sons, James Bedford, and David McKenzie, made settlement in what is now the present town of Crystal May 28. Others coming the first year were Fred Weiss, H.S. Stong, and Frank King.
The first house, for the Appletons, was built northeast of the present town bridge. Mr. Appleton was the first postmaster. The township meeting minutes of 1883 show A.F. Appleton as the justice of the peace. Mr. Albert F. Appleton was a natural leader and was instrumental in encouraging the growth and welfare of his town. He established a real estate office and eventually acquired a considerable amount of land. Linden Park – several acres covered with natural timber – was his gift to the city, in memory of a deceased son. He was president of the First Bank of Crystal of which J. L. Carr was cashier. Later the Appleton sons were bank officers – John F., vice president and Charles A., cashier. |
