"Charles Frey moved from Buffalo County, Wisconsin in 1879 to his present home, homesteading 160 acres. He now owns 2000 acres. Has 157 head of cattle, milks over 20 cows the year around; raises hogs and has 150 head of sheep. He is entirely out of debt and has money loaned. He has connected up with a high power line. His house is equipped with all modern conveniences, including electric power, which is used for pumping, grinding, cleaning etc.; pretty fair looking home don't you think?"--Printed on paper next to photograph in album. |

| Biography/History | Charles Frey was an immigrant farmer, and in 1878 at the age of 28 he came to Jamestown from Fountain City, Wisconsin. Charles Frey, son of a prosperous German farmer, had his heart set on farming, and he considered the free land in the James River Valley. He located on a tree claim, the first settler in what was to become Bloom Township. From the years 1879 until 1881 Charles Frey lived alone in his claim shanty. He broke ten arches of land and planted oats. In 1881, Frey returned to Fountain City, Wis., to marry Miss Minnie Krause. In February, 1882, he brought his bride to her new home in Dakota. Charles Frey and his wife worked hard all their lives. They raised eight children, and their farm was one of the most modern farms in Bloom Township, with electricity and running water in the house and barn long before many city homes had such conveniences. At 85 Charles Frey died from pneumonia contracted while chopping wood, hauled from his tree claim. |
