| Transcription | "Pictured is a scene from the parade, which was part of the welcome for Company H on its return from the Philippines on Sunday, October 1, 1899. The company left Jamestown May 3, 1898, for service in the [Spanish-American War - crossed off] Philippines. The picture of the girls' broom brigade was taken in the fountain of the park on North 5th Avenue (now (1966) 1st Ave.) and across from the Northern Pacific Railway headquarters. The two leaders were Mrs. D. S. Moore (wearing collarette) and Mrs. G. W. Lyman (white shirtwaist). A crowd of between 4, 000 and 5, 000 watched the parade, according to the Alert. Marshal of the Day Senator Casey and his staff rode horse back, followed by Junior Company H, trained by W. H. Coggeshall. 'Jamestown was never so generously and profusely decorated for any occasion as this, ' reported the Alert. 'Thousands of yards of bunting and thousands of flags, big and little, were used on Fifth Avenue, and the business part of the city was very handsomely decorated. *** Morris Beck's clothing store (later Clinic Drug, now(1966) Hawkins Drug) * had a fine new flag swinging in the breeze from the top of a tall staff.
