| Biography/History | Martin Joos was born in Wisconsin in 1851. "He arrived in Jamestown in 1876. For a time he operated a livery barn. In 1878, Martin's brother George and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Joos, came to Dakota. Martin then turned farmer. The three men homesteaded north of Jamestown - John near Fried, George at the 5-mile corner on Highway 20 (still called the Joos Corner) and Martin on the west side of Highway 20, 2 ½ miles north of Highway 10. … In 1889, Martin Joos returned to Wisconsin to marry Miss Janet More and bring her to Jamestown. They remained on the farm until 1905. By this time their two children, Janet and Russell, were of school age and Mr. and Mrs. Joos felt they would get a better education in Jamestown. Joos continued to work his farm while living in town until his death October 15, 1935, on his 84th birthday." |
