| Description | This photograph shows the tombstone of Richard J. Strand, who went missing in WWII. The tombstone is made from granite and has several words carved into it. It reads "IN MEMORIAM, RICHARD J. STRAND T/SGT. 498 BOMB. SQDN. V. H. BORN OCT 21, 1919. MISSING IN ACTION OVER TOKYO. MAY 24, 1945." Two small yellow flowers are also visible. |

| Transcription | "Richard James Strand. Richard James Strand was born October 19, 1919, at St. Thomas, N.D. to James and Beatrice Strand. He attended elementary school at St. Thomas to age ten. Because of his father's business requirements, he continued his elementary schooling in Grand Forks and Valley City, ND and Kearney, Nebraska. His schooling was continued at Kearney and graduated from high school in 1935. Thereafter he attended college at Kearney. Having decided to make optometry his lifetime profession, he attended Northern Illinois College of Optometry for two years. In July of 1941, he enlisted in the Air Force as an electronics technician. In 1944 after various tours of duty, he was sent to Saipan as a radar and communications technician with a bombing squadron. He was reported missing on his twenty-sixth bombing mission over Japan. No further information as to his fate was obtainable" – Printed on label. |
