My dear Mr. O'Malley: I write to thank you and say how much I appreciate your action. I understand that yours is the first petition ever filed in the history of the country under the Presidential preference primary. Will you treat this letter as confidential? Faithfully yours, Theodore Roosevelt. Mr. Darby O'Malley, Valley City, N.D."--Typed on letter with Roosevelt's signature.

Biography/HistoryIn 1912 Darby O'Malley, former mayor of Valley City, filed the first petition asking voters to endorse Theodore Roosevelt for president. The petition, containing between 150 and 200 signatures, was sent to the North Dakota Secretary of State to put Roosevelt's name on the ticket for the preferential primary election.
