| Biography/History | Walden (Cass). This GNRR loading station was built in 1912 in SE1/4 Sec. 30-143-55, Rochester Twp. six miles west of Page on the Surrey cutoff line. It is thought to have been named for the famous Walden Pond in MA, known by most through the writings of Henry David Thoreau. Walden is a common English place name, derived from the Teutonic word meaning mighty, and an Old English name meaning from the wooded valley. A population of 10 has been reported at various times over the years, and in 1965 the site still had two operating elevators, although one of these shut down in 1975 and was demolished. |
