| Description | View of the front and side of the three storey brick building with awnings which was the original M. G. Straus clothing store. The Kindred Hotel is also in the building. The two story building at the end looking down the street on the right has a sign for Valley City Grocery Co. There are a few people on the sidewalks and two early automobiles on the side of the road. |

| Biography/History | The Kindred Hotel was opened on June 2, 1883. The store on the first level in the image belonged to Adolph Sternberg, who operated a clothing store in Valley City from 1882 to his death in 1908. After Sternberg's death, the store was passed along to his cousin, M.G. Straus whose clothing store became a longtime fixture in Valley City. |
